Falmouth & Penryn's own loud and funky Afro-Brazilian drum and dance group (or Samba band by another name!). We play a multitude of styles from all over Brazil, including Samba, Samba Reggae, Maracatu and more. Our aim is to interpret the vast array of Brazilian percussion and dance repertoire in an authentic way yet respectful to the traditions they are from.
DakaDoum was formed in 2012 by Robin Tyndale-Biscoe (Percussion Director) and Sarah Hyams (Dance Director). Sarah has since moved back to Oxford and the role of dance director taken over by Anna Roberts.
Robin has been performing and teaching Brazilian rhythms for more than 15 years, has visited Brazil several times, studying with top Mestres and playing with various Escolas de Samba, Blocos and Maracatu Nacaos, from Rio, Salvador and Recife. He continues to teach Brazilian percussion at Falmouth University and in schools across Cornwall, as well as leading the regular Tuesday night DakaDoum session!
Anna, a former student of Sarah's, has taken on the lead of the dancers, bringing her excellent enthusiasm and well crafted knowledge of Afro-Brazilian dance to the group.
Te combination of DakaDoum drums and dance is a feast for both the ears and the eyes, bringing the authentic sounds of Brazil to the streets of the South West.
We hold regular weekly sessions/classes in percussion & Dance (Tuesday nights at the AMATA building, University Falmouth, Penryn Campus). Sessions are led by Robin (Drums) and Anna (Dance).
Dakadoum offers workshops and regular classes in schools and the community. For more info please go to the Workshops page
